Description
“This textile is woven and dyed in Nigeria, by the Tiv people. Woven out of cotton and died from indigo dyes. The design of this textile is called “”””lion’s paw”””” because it reminds them of that animal. What distinguishes this technique of cloth manufacture among all the cloth made and used traditionally in Africa is that each band is dyed separately before being combined with other, similar bands to form a full cloth. All other African cloth is woven the same way. The undyed bands are sewn together to form a cloth before the entire cloth is dyed or designed as the case may be. That makes this cloth unique in all of Africa. Of course the fact that each band is, effectively, a separate textile creates the fascinating discontinuity of this traditional, highly creative Nigerian cloth.
Since this textile was recently woven and not used, we cannot guarantee that this textile will not run if washed. We recommend dry cleaning although you may be able safely to hand wash it.
100% cotton.”
